For laser printer users looking to reduce their printing costs, OEM compatible toner cartridges can be an appealing option. However, conflicting advice from manufacturers and consumers can make deciding between OEM and OEM compatible cartridges confusing. Does buying a cheaper compatible cartridge mean buying a product of lesser quality? Let’s take a look at the facts.

What is toner?

Toner powder is a fine dry mixture of plastic particles, carbon, and black or other colouring agents that make the actual image on the paper. The toner is transferred to paper via an electrostatically charged drum unit and fused on to the paper by heated rollers during the printing process.

What is the difference between OEM & compatible cartridges?

OEM printer cartridges are made by the original equipment manufacturer. So, if you own an HP printer, then the HP brand is the OEM cartridge for your printer.

Compatible cartridges (sometimes referred to as remanufactured) are cartridges made by a third party manufacturer. Quality third party manufacturers disassemble used OEM cartridges, replace all worn parts, refill the cartridge with toner and test each cartridge before shipping them to their supply chain. Compatible cartridges should meet or exceed OEM specifications – any difference in print quality is difficult to detect with the naked eye.

What are the advantages of compatible cartridges?

Reduced costs are the main reason people choose compatible products.  Compatible cartridges are approximately 30% cheaper than original cartridges.

There’s also a sustainability element.  Compatible cartridges are usually recycled, thereby reducing landfill and the use of environmentally harmful materials and pollutants.

Are there any disadvantages to compatible cartridges?

If you’ve heard complaints about the quality of compatible cartridges, it’s because not all third party manufacturers are equal. Some manufacturers compromise on quality to deliver a cheaper product.
