In February the Central government of China implemented a policy for the use of aftermarket printer suppliers as its designated source of printer supplies. Only 4 companies have been selected to have the desired quality – one of which is Print-Rite. In July the world’s leading independent tester of document imaging products – Buyer Laboratory LLC (BLI) awarded Brother and Samsung Laser Printers with “Outstanding Achievement – Energy Efficiency” awards to 5 of their laser printer models. Over an 8 month period BLI tested competitive laser printer models in each range and found the Brother MFC-8950DW & MFC-8910DW along with the Samsung CLX-6260FD, CLX-6260FW & CLP-680 series to be among the most energy efficient models within their groups.

These winners exhibited significantly lower than average energy consumption for their respective product categories and offer a variety of environmentally friendly features to help users reduces their overall environmental impact.

The Brother MFC-8950DW & MFC-8910DW exhibited energy consumption from 41% to as much as 51% lower than the competitive average.

While Samsung’s CLP-680 series energy consumption rate was 55% lower than average & the CLX-6260FD & CLX-6260FW were both 52% lower than the average. In a recent post we discussed how multifunction printers are on the rise, and are predicted to shortly take over single function printers in market share. Some more compelling evidence has come in with the quarterly print volumes being updated which show that not only are MFP’s being placed in offices more often, they are also printing a higher volume of pages than single function printers.

In a Photizo Group study it showed that multifunction printers are currently printing 2/3 of the total print volumes in offices proving that they are highly important to business efficiency & further supporting the predictions that Multifunction Printers will become the printer of choice in the not too distant future.

In a recent Photizo Group forecast they found an interesting trend in the recent purchases of printers and multifunction printers (MFP’s). While the single function printer market is on the decline, the multifunction printer market is overtaking the market share. A reflection of todays paperless society some might say, however there is more than meets the eye behind this current trend.

In recent years the MFP market has had an unparalleled price decrease of around 30% making the price difference between printers and MFP’s fairly insignificant and makes it very easy for the consumer to spend that little extra for all the additional features of an MFP. Along with a price decrease there has also come quality increases making them even more irresistible! For only a little more money you can have added quality, functionality and eliminate the need for other office equipment.

What is toner?

Toner powder is a fine dry mixture of plastic particles, carbon, and black or other colouring agents that make the actual image on the paper. The toner is transferred to paper via an electrostatically charged drum unit and fused on to the paper by heated rollers during the printing process.

What is the difference between OEM & compatible cartridges?

OEM printer cartridges are made by the original equipment manufacturer. So, if you own an HP printer, then the HP brand is the OEM cartridge for your printer.

Compatible cartridges (sometimes referred to as remanufactured) are cartridges made by a third party manufacturer. Quality third party manufacturers disassemble used OEM cartridges, replace all worn parts, refill the cartridge with toner and test each cartridge before shipping them to their supply chain. Compatible cartridges should meet or exceed OEM specifications – any difference in print quality is difficult to detect with the naked eye. 

What are the advantages of compatible cartridges?

Reduced costs are the main reason people choose compatible products.  Compatible cartridges are approximately 30% cheaper than original cartridges.

There’s also a sustainability element.  Compatible cartridges are usually recycled, thereby reducing landfill and the use of environmentally harmful materials and pollutants.
