    Labeller Buying Guide

There are Label Makers and Label Printers...choose the one that’s right for your business.
  • Label Makers

The first thing to know is that there are three different categories; handheld, desktop and trade/industrial.

To select the most appropriate, you first need to determine the type of labels you intend to print by asking yourself the following questions:

    • What size do I need? There are options ranging from 3.5 mm to 36 mm.
    • How many lines of print do I need? Anywhere from 1 to 16 lines.
    • How many print styles do I require? Options range from 1 to 10.

Next, select models that offer features that’ll make life just that little bit easier, for example:

    • A QWERTY keyboard.
    • Computer connectivity.
    • Moderate or large memory storage capacity. This isn’t an issue for labelers that connect to a computer. (Moderate means 10 labels or less, whereas large means 100 labels, or up to 2,800 characters).

When it comes to brands, Brother and Dymo are the largest manufacturers of label makers and the most reliable on the market.

If you keep all the above in mind, you’re sure to select the label maker best suited to your need.

  • Label Printers

If you’re printing a large number of labels a dedicated label printer will save time and improve efficiency.

To choose the best label printer for your needs, you should think about the following:

    • What’s your preferred computer connection - USB, wireless or network?
    • The maximum width of the labels you print.
    • The number of templates you need to store in memory.
    • Whether print speed is important. (Unlike regular printers, it’s better to measure their speed relative to others by millimetres per second rather than labels per minute).
